The last Kirkcaldie and Stains Tokens
John Kirkcaldie & Robert Stains founded their famous store in 1863. The company thrived. By the 1870's it became one of 47 NZ businesses to issue it's own coins - pennies & halfpennies. History repeated in the 21st Century when Kirk's issued silver coloured $250 and gold coloured $500 tokens - the last tokens ever issued by any of those 47 businesses. Kirk's, the last survivor closed on 17th January 2016
The tokens no longer buy goods but are a lasting memento of a great Wellington icon. Each pair has unique numbers in silver and gold finish and certificate of authenticity signed by the last Chairman of Kirkcaldie and Stains in a unique presentation pack
